(i) Because it is a safety device, which prevents the damage to electric appliances and circuit caused due to overloading. (1 Mark)

Over loading: It is caused when too many appliances are connected to a single socket./ Due to accidental hike in the supply voltage.
Short circuiting: It is caused due to direct contact of live wire with the neutral wire. (2 Marks)
