• Baking soda is prepared by passing carbon dioxide and ammonia gas through aqueous solution of sodium chloride. (1)

$\ce{NaCl + H2O + NH3 + CO2 -> NaHCO3 + NH4Cl}$
• Baking soda on heating releases $\ce{CO2}$ gas which makes cakes soft and spongy (1)
